I know a couple guys that are playing with these on DSMs and was wondering if anyone here has any experience or thoughts on them. Along with the wiring and the unit itself, it costs about the same as DSMLink or the like. I know a couple of people have complained about the limitations of tuning with DSMLink and piggybacks. Is the Megasquirt worth the possible trouble, or should someone just suck it up and go with an AEM or other unit?

Its come a long way, but I still think of it as more for a tinkerer than someone who is actually competing with and relying on the system. IMHO iys much better to go with a proven unit, like the AEM or similar.
If this is a competition car we are talking about then the case could be made for using MOTEC, as even a base M4 unit, which is reasonably priced, will give absolutely reliable service. This is why most motorsports professionals use MOTEC, because you DO NOT have to tinker with it and the unit itself is virtually failure free. In fact, I have never heard of a MOTEC unit failing in the field. YOu can also look into DTA as a possible alternative, as it is very similar to MOTEC and also very reasonably priced.

A customer got one for his multi port fuel injected Starion. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but the car won't run right without a needed update, and it turns out that it's no longer available, so he's SOL.

i have a couple of friends that are working on them w/ different cars, and it seems to be like any DIY project- you won't really save much time or money (not always, though) by the time it's all said and done, so it's more about the project itself and whether or not you enjoy that type of thing. Grassroots Motorsports has done several articles on them, which I believe are all online at www.grassrootsmotorsports.com
and Jack, I don't know if this will help the guy, but he might want to check out the megasquirt forum on rx7club (http://www.rx7club.com/forumdisplay.php?f=153) because there are some guys that have come up with a bunch of various hacks, both to the software and the hardware and it's not necessarily all 7-specific.
