View Full Version : larger turbo lower airflow?

Ok, my mods are in my signature but the question I have is when using a larger turbo, are airflow numbers typically lower at "average" boost levels (like near 20PSI)?
The reason I ask is that it seems that my logs for a 2nd gear pull at either 17, 18 or 21 psi only yield airlfow numbers right around 30 pounds per minute. I have the MAFT pulling out 20% at mid and high in order to keep my boostest lined up with my aem 3.5 bar. Will I see drastically higher numbers at say 26 PSI?
It just seems that I should have higher airflow numbers at 21 PSI with such a large turbo. I was expecting somewhere closer to at least36 pounds per minute. Will I see higher numbers in 3rd gear as opposed to 2nd gear?
Or is it because I have to pull out 20% on the MAFT that the numbers are reading lower than they actually are? I decided to use the MAFT instead of airflow sliders because the airflow sliders were bottomed out at -20% and still off.
Just curious more than anything. I'll try and post a log later if necessary.

Higher psi + higher revs = more airflow.

Larger turbos let you run more boost, and more airflow. They dont make anymore or any less than your engine will consume. In theory you could have greater airflow with a larger turbo at the same boost level because usually the exhaust side is less restrictive and improves your volumetric efficiency, but all things considered equal, unless you improve breathing of the engine, improve cooling of your air charge, or increase boost pressures, your airflow and thus power levels should not change appreciably from one turbo to the next.

All logged airflow values will be modified by whatever piggyback system you use, so always take that into account if you are trying to compare numbers. MAFT systems in general are not usually that great for calibration and vary from unit to unit... that said, they are usually pretty repeatable at least for the same unit.

That makes sense. I just noticed some peoples logs over at the DSMLink forum showed like 34 pounds per minute of airflow at 19 PSI on like big 16G's. Not that big of a deal really, I was more curious than anything

They're also at sea level.

Forget going by that darn thing. Does the car seem faster? If you put the stock maf on then the numbers would probably be more indicative.
