View Full Version : Cooling fan seized up. Can I replace just the motor?

Coming back from Don's shop today my passenger side radiator cooling fan decided it was time to give up the farm (I had no idea until I got home). In traffic it was getting really hot but thankfully most of my drive was at 70+mph so it stayed just slightly hotter than normal.

I checked it out when I got home and found the fan is really hard to turn by hand. Don't know if it fried anything upstream (relay, fuse, etc) but I sure hope not.

Is it possible to just replace the fan motor instead of buying the whole fan assembly? A new complete unit runs anywhere between $150 - $210. I could always hit the junk yard but who knows how long those would last.

1G or 2? I've got a 1G fan that I had to cut the connector off of to wire in some aftermarket pushers.

It's yours if you want it. I'm in Ft. Collins.

Could always go to slim fans in preparation for a front mount setup :D You can get a pair on ebay for under $100 shipped. I think I have a 14 and a 12 or something, they do pretty well mounted flush with the radiator.

Just wanted to say thank you to everybody for replying and/or wanting to help. Don helped me out yesterday. He went above and beyond and that makes an impression.

(Just as a little side note you can replace the cooling fan motor only should it need to be replaced. And it's easy to do. One nut holding the fan on and 3 small screws mounting the motor to the plastic frame. Oh and I have a 1990 GSX.)

Anyway, unfortunately it cooked the fan fuse on the battery fuse block and these fuses are not carried at AutoZone, Checkers, Napa, Advance or most likely anywhere else. So I have to hit Skyline Mits tomorrow after work hoping they keep them in stock.

Oh, and yes, I'm thinking slim fans are in the future. :D Anybody happen to know how many amps the stock fans draw?

Thanks again,
Shawn

Yeah, they usually have the fuses at parts stores, the parts guys just arent aware of it.

I hit all those stores and we found some fuses that were really close but nothing that matched it perfectly (I even brought it along with me). It's that Pink 30A fuse next to the positive battery post. My fuse has a small indentation on each side that it looks like is used to key it into place. However, I just took another look at the fuse block and there aren't any protruding pieces for it to "key" into. So I will just go back to Checkers and get one and see if it fits. If it does then I'm golden and if not then I go to Skyline Mits tomorrow.

I tried the different looking pink 30A fuse (it's a little bigger in size than the others) and it works like a champ! And now when the fan kicks on it doesn't bog the engine down near as much. The other one really use to load it down. The ISC would still make up for it but that bad bearing in the fan motor must have really been putting a big load on the alternator. I can barely tell the fan kicks on now.

Thanks!
