View Full Version : Re-using Pressure Plates?

So my clutch is slipping like crazy, I ordered a new disc (6puck unsprung) for my ACT clutch. I have replaced the clutch twice before both times with a 2600 unit (PP and street disc). I know it is common to just throw away the pp and disc when replacing a clutch but I have heard of people re-using the ACT pp.

Will I regret doing this? Should it be machined?

They can be machined but the flywheel will need machined accordingly. If it was slipping, it would depend if it was completely the disk that was the cause of the slipping...

Both flywheel and pressure plate surfaces wear out so you will get less clamping force on it reusing the same pressure plate as well as some potentially unpleasant chatter if it has appreciably heat warped.

We can resurface the PP and FW as a matching set with the original clamping force. I did it 3 times in my race car. My brother did it twice to his I believe too. We charge between $50-100 to do it and need the PP, FW and disk. We have a jig set up so we can get everything perfect. It is not recommended, you should always use new parts, but if you're cheap like my brother and I are, there is nothing wrong with machining the old parts to work like new again if you know what you are doing.

I too have done this. And as Jack said, is not recommended. But when you have no money like a few of my friends, you have to improvise. Correctly I should say. All cars are still running fine to this day.
