I'm gonna install it this weekend, and was wondering what gaskets I need.
So far I have this list:
Exhaust manifold gasket
Exhaust manifold to turbo gasket
Turbo to O2 housing gasket
Oil drain line to turbo gasket
Oil drain line to oil pan gasket
14mm Crush washers
6mm Crush washers
Turbo Bolts
Cat gaskets
O2 to Down-pipe gasket
Also is there anything that I should do while I'm in there? Liek porting the exhaust housing?

Are you changing your exhaust manifold? You don't have to remove the manifold to change the turbo. It might make it a little easier, but it isn't necessary. You'll also want to get some antiseize for your bolts or they will weld themselves on. Lastly, FP already ported the exhaust housing on that turbo.

Well i was thinking about making my exhaust mani into a 7cm opeing when I did the turbo swap.

Here's the install kit that I'm thinking about ordering:
I'm also getting 5qts of royal purple oil. Is there anything else that I need?

LMK if you want help I have done stock turbo swaps a few times.

well I noticed that the kit only has the oil drain gaskets and not the feed line gaskets... btw not sure what LMK means

The feed line screws in so it doesn't have a gasket.

ok, cool, that's what I was wanting to know, i'll order the kit for like 30 bucks and shoudl be able to install it this weekend *crosses fingers*

For the turbo install, you *should* replace:
Turbo oil drain line gaskets (upper and lower)
Turbo oil drain line (typically cracks and leaks)
Turbo oil feed line. (buildup inside restricts flow and pressure from CHRA.
Crush washers for coolant and oil banjo fittings. (2 washers for each bolt connection).
Everything else has a high probability that you can reuse it without leaks, damage, or needed replacement sooner than later.

ok, looks like I'm gonna need about 250-300 for the install, with oil feed & drain, oil, gaskets, & bolts... Does this sound right, or is tehre some place I can get it for a hell of a lot cheaper?

Why are you paying someone else to install it? And why did you buy a t-28? Old technology.

i meant 250-300 for everything that I would need. Gaskets, oil lines, bolts, & RP oil. Then I was going to drop it off over at my brothers, let it cool all night and then get to work on it saturday.
I didn't buy a T28, I traded for it, Plus I liek to think that its more a sleeper turbo untill i can get a E3B16G turbo

Unless youre popping your hood (you dirty dirty car whore you) at anyone that comes near you, it doesnt matter how your turbo looks under the hood, sleeper or otherwise.
The term sleeper is much better applied to the whole exterior of the car, using the typical human foible of judging at first look against them.
Example - my car.

still, I'd like to be able to pop the hood if some one asks, then have them still wonder why I blew them away, or was able to keep up... But that's just my ego talking :D

Popping your hood for strangers is a good way to get your car stolen a few days later and never know why.

Hey, another quick question. I just got a Greddy Type R bov, I heard that these may have fitment issues. Will It fit in the stock position?
XakEp
October 2nd, 2007, 03:53 PM
yes, assuming you have a UIC with the flange for it.
ricehunter
October 2nd, 2007, 04:42 PM
I have the greddy flange or the stock IC pipe and this one comes with a 3" pipe with the flange gaskets and bolts

Greddy Type "R" or Type "S"? The Type R is huge. I don't think it'll fit in the stock location. The Type S should though.
ricehunter
October 2nd, 2007, 09:42 PM
R...yea the big one... When it comes in should I put it up for sale? I was looking for an S/RS but i couldn't find one for cheep enough

The Greddy flange I used to use was about 1/4" too small to fit in the stock uip. So you will need to wrap something around it to "fatten" it out if its the same. And what's this 3" pipe you are talking about? The type R is definitely taller but not sure if there is still clearance or not...you could always trade for a type S if you needed.
Is this t28 a Forced Performance turbo? If so, I wouldn't bother going to the evo3 because the difference isn't enough to warrant the money spent. A better jump would be to an FP 3052 or something:D
I wouldn't call it old technology either...If it's an FP build, they use updated wheel designs. Either way it will do what it's meant to better than the t25:)
ricehunter
October 2nd, 2007, 10:29 PM
Yep its FP, I'm fairly happy with the trade :D and its ported w/17PSI wastegate actuator
And the other bidder offered me 100 bucks, but if I can get the S or RS with recirculation kit on a trade I'd be happy with that. As soon as it comes in I'll post a WTT

Back to the porting question... I can't tell from your photos whether the turbine housing is ported or not? Regardless, if your 2G exhaust manifold is stock/unported, there will be a step discontinuity because its opening is sized for a 6cm^2 turbine housing with a fire ring whereas the turbine housing on the Big28 is sized for a 7cm^2 housing. I'd suggest porting the exhaust manifold (and turbine housing as well, if not already ported) while you have things apart.
Exhaust Manifold Porting VFAQ (http://www.vfaq.com/mods/porting-exhman.html)
Turbine Housing Porting VFAQ (http://www.vfaq.com/mods/porting-turbo.html)
Make sure you get a 7cm^2 exhaust mani/turbine gasket. I recommend the SS one sold by RRE--just don't get a copper gasket, or you'll be back in there soon to replace it.

yea, looked at those earlier, I just don't have a high powered grinder, just a dermmel. But I guess it would be better to do that while its out.
Kibo

To do it you'd want to pick up a carbide bur (or 2) at ~$20-25 each, an electric die grinder (maybe one from HF?), and a set of mounted stones (~$4 at HF).
That is, unless you have access to a BIG air compressor--one that can supply 10+ cfm of air at 90psi without trouble. I do my porting at my workplace because I can do it behind the loading dock (no mess to clean up) and the building compressors have no trouble keeping up with my grinder. My Craftsman 150psi 30gal compressor works for small amounts of grinding, but not full-on porting.
That said, I suggest porting everything or having someone do it for you. :)

Type r is a big BOV that is made for big boost. You could get surge with it.. I have a type S that i will trade you for the type r if you'd like.

No. You just need to set it up properly. If a BOV is not properly set up, it can be just as bad as not having a BOV at all.
A Tial can be considered the grand-daddy to most (if not all) BOV's out there. I know of several people out there that have successfully set them up without any surge or fluttering. Even on turbo's as small as a 14b.
It's turbo flow and how much of that flow that the engine can (or cannot) consume that creates surge.

Well I'd go the Tial route, but there's that whole recirculation issue, and I'v eheard that the GM MAF isin't worth having

If you can tune it, its worth having. Most people just toss it and and dont tune it.

what a concept...tuning a "Tuner" car...it all seems to make scence now. Still I need something that can tide me over until I can get the 300 needed for the GM MAF setup
But I'm still looking for gaskets...Anyone?

Get DSMlink before the GM MAFT. Seriously, this is the FIRST mod anyone should perform on their car. If I could go back in time and tell myself anything, it would be to drop the cash on DSMlink before anything else.

I'd love to but that's 600+ next day shipping both ways that I don't currently have. But after I get the turbo and FMIC installed I'm going for it, so I can do my fuel/engine management properly.

The Greddy flange I used to use was about 1/4" too small to fit in the stock uip.
Quick note, for all of those that are adding an after market BOV. when you take out the stock BOV there is a rubber piece that goes around the bottom, I moved it to the bottom of the GReddy flange and it fit great.

Why not just do a crushed 1g BOV?
ricehunter
October 17th, 2007, 02:05 PM
Because I bought a greddy type-R for 70 bucks on ebay and traded it for a type-s that will take me further than a crushed 1g BOV Plus its adjustable.
