Hey Guys,

I just tried connecting my logger programs to my car and they both said they couldn't connect. Does any one happen to know what the DB-9 (serial) connection is supposed to be for the Alex C. Peper Datalogger program. My brother had the cable with ODBII connector, but he wasn't sure about the BD-9 to RJ-45 connector. I'd really like to get this working so I can put on the AFC & 660's. Any Ideas?

It's a OBDII to RJ-45 (ethernet cable) standard ethernet cable then a RJ-45 to DB-9 (serial) I've been connecting it using the Belkin F5U109 USB to ethernet connection. i may try another one or a PCMCIA Serial card (if I can borrow one from work)

My brother said he had this problem about 2 years ago when he tried toconnect it to one of his friends cars. I have a 95 and I know some OBDII code readers won't work on it, I'm wondering if its the same with the programs.

How does this look, for the setup:

I assume you're using a laptop then? Could you post a link to whatever software you're using? I use a palm & palm'n'stein, but if you can point me to your software I can give it a go.

Right now, I'm betting it's one of two things:

1.) there are protocol issues
2.) The ethernet to serial adapter is wonky.

Usb ethernet adapters are finicky for one reason or another...

I'll have to look when I get home, but I know one (that came with the cable) is Alex Peper's http://www.obd-2.com/ What happens is it says "Busy Signal" then "Terminate" and that happens with the car off, on or running. That's not quite how mine is setup, when I get home I'll post the setup of the converter.

I was stupid and left the PCMCIA card at work...

I found this diagram for the ISO 9141 to DB-9 but it requires a chip:
http://pinouts.ru/CarElectronics/obdii_cables_pinout.shtml

Also I found another site that shows how to make one:
http://hem.passagen.se/tomasf/obd2/

But these don't help, I've been trying to find the diagram for the OBD-2 program or the OBDtool program. Its supposed to just be a cable...unless that's what is wrong with it is I have the wrong DB-9 connector that doesn't have the resisters in it.

ok, I've figured out this much, just need to fill in the 2 gaps on the DB9 connector.

I just need to figure out where the Red and green wire go.

So are you trying to build a cable or do you have one already?

I have one already that came with the OBD-2 software. I was working on my brother's car some time ago, but he said he tried it on multiple cars within a 2-3 year period and it didn't seem to work. The cable is comprised of a OBDII to RJ45 conector Standard Ethernet cable and a RJ-45 to DB-9 connector.

If I could find the pinout for what the DB-9 is supposed to be I can make another ethernet cable specifically for this. I guess I'll take a multimerter or something and try testing the current pinout to see how they compare.

Again i'm going to try to remember to grab the PCMCIA Serial adapter today to make sure that its not just the adapter that I was using.

Ok so I have the pinout of the cable I have, but i still don't have anything to compare it too.

I have a similar setup for my GTI. I'll take a look tonight or tomorrow and ohm out the connections. I'll do it as soon as I can, but work's been crazy and it may be a little.

Thanks man, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks man, I'd really appreciate it.

So I just checked and I have box in the middle of the cable that does some sort of conversion. I can get the pinout from the ODB2 connector to the RJ-45, if that will help you. I suspect the box contains isolators so neither of the computers blows up the other one. As such, you can't ohm out the lines...
