Ok, so I need to do the emissions test today and I still don't have a cat.... Should I risk trying to pass without it or am I going to fail because of actual emissions out the tail? I have a brand new stroker motor with about 600 miles on it (if that) running stock compression, so I think it is running pretty clean. My fuel trims are in line and unless he really tries to hit boost, he shouldn't ever see more than 2 psi. I was thinking of putting a bottle of GTP in and just going for it but money is an issue and I only have 2 tries... Any suggestions?

If your fuel trims are correct, and no visable smoke out of the tailpipe, it will probably pass the HC/CO/CO2 part of the test.

We've seen cars fail the NOx part with a faulty or hollow/missing cat.

You still may fail the visual inspection for having no cat, if the guy knows or cares what he's looking at. If he does look and doesn't find it, he may call someone else over and ask them to look. Trouble ensues.

I'd really try to get a stock exhaust on there, or even a new cat.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

To my knowledge, there is no longer an OBD-II test in Colorado. Last June I had to get my 2g inspected. The did not visually check for a cat, the underhood visual inspection lasted about 5 seconds, and nothing was ever connected to the OBD-II port. They cannot fail you for a CEL either.

However, IF they were to perform OBD-II check, there is a "readiness state" that must be activated in order to pass. This is an internal long-term set of tests that the ECU performs transparently, setting a few bits in memory once completed.
The official DSMLink software does not allow you to artificially set the the readiness bits, but it can be done quite easily if you hunt around for the answer.

Lack of emissions equipment seems to have no effect on the test for most people. I had no EVAP or EGR systems and passed.

Finally, I'm confident that almost any emissions failure due to actual exhaust gas content, or improper vehicle operation, can be corrected through ECU tuning.

My car failed twice due to operator error. I drove down the street, took 20% fuel out where the operator was giving too much throttle and passed fine.

GRRRRRRR!!!

Not to hijack the thread (but I'm gonna anyway...) ;-)

{{{{RANT ON!!}}}}
I JUST got back from the place (just off Havana street) and every time is an adventure . I pull up, the Idiot waves me in to the 4wheel tread mill, and I tell him that I have a waiver form (17" tires) and start to pull my car around the side of the bldg. He tells me to go in anyway.. So I do...

They fiddlefart around for 10 -15 mins, hook the car up, I wait another 15-20 mins, then the eureka comes over them that I need to have my car done outside like the 81 and older vehicles... (hmmm, what a novel idea!!) This shemale jumps in my car and drives off... (I just stand there in awe....) She (it?) drives it around to the location where I was going to originally, and then in a snotty voice barks at one of the coworkers to get the supervisor... (another 15 mins goes by...) I am standing out there just waiting for some sort of information as to what the hold-up is, but of course none of the geniuses has a clue...

Wait another 15 mins for them to do what ever it is they need to do to initialize the machine... No one could figure it out, and finally after a ridiculous amount of time they hand me my waiver back (which, if I would have had it in hand, I would have blazed the trail a long time ago...) and tell me the "Machine is broken" and I will have to come back another day..

When I ask what time they close, they said 5:30... How convenient, right about the time they handed my waiver back to me..

IDIOTS!!!!!!

{{{Rant Off}}}}

Sorry I just had to vent.. I guess I'll get to do this all over again tomorrow.. YAY!

Now on to your question, based upon my experience today, if you don't have a cat you wont pass. They kept looking around on my car to make sure I had all the emissions equipment (cat included) the "supervisor" was called over to check it out a 2nd and 3rd time, they kept looking under the hood, (sorta funny actually) as if something just didn't look right (EGT probe maybe?) but they just couldn't put their finger on it. Then they kept using the mirror under the car, and around the front of the car, but after about 10 mins of this they decided to let it go on to the test... which is where the fun I mentioned above began....

I have 17" wheels on my car and they just drove it on. Changed my DSMLink settings (following Jesse's advice) to a -25 on the sliders. Passed. Though they shouldn't, they will go to open loop.

This brings up a new question. Do you have to remove your Nitrous Oxide bottle durring testing?

I am guessing not. They don't look in the trunk / hatch area, but will look under the hood. They might notice it, but I doubt they can / will say anything about it since it isn't used during the test.

Yes, well they have always put my car on the treadmill in the past. Then the last time I needed to get my car emmissioned, (2 yrs ago) they wouldn't allow me to do it. I had to take my car down to the inspection station up off of Chambers and Colfax and have it inspected for a waiver. I think that cost me an additional 25 bucks or so..

Now with the waiver they just do the idle - 2500 rpm tail pipe test. {shrug}

I've never had any issues other than putting back on the stock exhaust. I went in there last year (117th and Main St. in Broomfield) with the FP Green and the stock exhaust hanging by coat hangers. Luckily it's 1000 yards from Kenny's house so it made it easy to drive it there like that. Left DSMLink and everything else alone to how I had it tuned. Guy looks under car and does a quick look under the hood looks up at me and pulls it in to do the ODBII test with the car idling on the rollers. 45 seconds pass by...he gets out and pulls everything off and pulls it out to the end of the building. I got mad thinking I had failed the ODBII test. I ran out there and said what went wrong. He said "I see a lot of imports come through with mods and stuff all the time. Most of them fail the first time. I've never had one quick pass. I'm not sure what you got running in here, but this thing is running good." That was awsome. :cool:

But now I have the AEM EMS and I am screwed. It willl not pass ODBII and as far as I know that is still a must here in Colorado. Though hopefully the new law passes where we don't have to go get emmissions anymore and just pay more when registering. Otherwise I'm using my old college address so that I'm in Weld county.

Anyways, maybe you should come to this one (117th and Main St. in Broomfield) to get through without a hassel?
