im getting a moderatly loud klunk noise when i downshift from 3rd to 2nd, and sometimes on hard upshifing in my 1g. its comming from the left front of the car, i have new ball joints and just put in new polyurathan control arm bushings, everything feels tight under there, im kinda lost on where to look next. could it be motor mounts?? just looking for ideas on where to look next

Check your motor mounts, and also check your CV boots for tears. Do you see any grease/oil under there?

Usually the mount near the timing belt will cause that issue.

CV axles are new on both sides also. so your thinking the large motor mount
on the drivers side could cause this? ill check that out. my downpipe runs really close to my transfer case, like dam near rubbing it, could the downpipe be hitting the transfer case?

Could your alternator be hitting anything? Definently look at all your motor mounts.
