View Full Version : Have some nitrous questions(16g/e85)

Thinking of adding a 50-100 shot of some nitrous to my setup. Rebuilt stock 6 bolt w/ 2g pistons. 16g, e85, maf-t/safc, 1200cc, 255lph, and all the other little stuff.

I dont really have timing control and have base timing around 2* BTDC. With the logger set at 2* in the options I see timing that builds from about 9* when boost hits hard and a max timing of about 22* by 5500 rpm and then drops a little due to the 1g timing curve. This is with boost hitting 30psi and dropping to about 24psi by redline.

Would I be safe with a 50-100 shot on this setup with this timing. I was thinking of just a 50 shot to be safe. What do you guys think. Thanks.

I would recommend investing in something better to tune with first.
If not then I would retard the timing at least 2 degrees for the 50 shot. 50shot and 22 degrees of timing would probably not agree with your motor.

I second that. 22* is a lot of timing I'm surprised your not pulling knock.

I have seen at most 4 counts of knock running 30psi and this timing. Got to love e85!!!

If you're dead set on nitrous, I say try it. No one is going to really know for sure. Just start with something like a 35 shot and work your way up while looking for knock. As long as you can accept that something bad could happen, it doesn't matter.

There are other options, too, though. What about cams or an intake manifold? You're probably looking for something bigger than a 16g later on down the road, why not get something that'll be useful to maximize your setup now and later? What about an eprom ecu and using something like tunerpro and an eprom burner instead of dsmlink? You can get an eprom burner for something like $50 - $100 and tunerpro is free. Sell your safc and those two parts are mostly paid for.

Just throwing out ideas.

I think I may try to go with eprom burner and tuner pro, or dsmlink. The other choice has a lot cheaper price but the dsmlink is real user friendly. Then most likely a turbo. I want to hit the track with this 16g and see if she can do an 11 before I change something.

An 11 with no nitrous and a 16g tuned with an afc? I would be very very surprised if you will be able to get into the 12's. But one never does know...

Well ran with an e85 evo the other day and I know those things can make good power. some have mid 11's. I guess I will have to prove it. I know this thing has a lot in it.

Depends on what they have done to them. My 2g spyder with a big16g and fmic can usually kill evo's. I haven't had the chance to get it to the track yet though.

An e85 evo9 with a stock turbo flashed can lay over 400whp at 26+psi. I can kill any stock to light modified pump gas evo9. But these e85 powered evo's have some balls.

Im going to shim my turbo and see if I can get it to spike 35-40psi, that way I can hold 30psi to redline. Add timing from 22* too 26* and hope for the best. If I have to get cams and SMIM I will do it. But I know Im at least in mid to lo 12's. 11's cant be too hard.

I like that. I don't doubt that it's possible, but man I'm not sure I'd call it easy. Maybe I'm just more pessimistic because I know what mods I have and what I've run.

Anyway, good luck on 11s. I'd love to see it hopefully sooner rather than later. Most people move on before they hit the goals they really want.

Its all about that weight to power ratio. My last talon weighed in at 2860lb. I want to get this one down to around 2700lb without making it to unbearable.

Ah, that makes more sense. I've gone the other way where I'm trying to keep AC and most everything else. :(

Bert is right, 11s aren't easy regardless of the setup. Plenty of people (myself included) have proven that simply having a big turbo won't make a car fast.

That said, I'd certainly be cheering for a no-nitrous 11s 16G at this altitude! :D

There was a guy that went down to Jacks shop with an 11.9 16g on e85. He then said he thought my bro's 16g felt a little quiker and I feel mine is quicker than his. I just need this thing to hold 30psi.

So I take it you've never been to the track with your setup?

LOL!
It shall be, it shall be done.

I'll go ahead and say this, single digits next summer.

Not yet, I was going to and then I had an unfortunate spin off a road which caused me to bend my driveshaft and crack my windshield. So I need to fix that windshield.

I will be trying to get the turbo to hold at least 28psi by redline and bringing it to the dyno to do some quick tuning and then replace that windshield. 11's on a 16g and safc can happen. At least I hope, LOL.

There's a thread on Tuners right now by a guy who went 10.9 on an Evo3 16g on pump gas. He had to use 4 washers to shim the wastegate to get it to hold 30psi, and he says the flapper only opens about 1/8" by doing that.

Actually he was running 110 race fuel, but yea thats what I will be doing. His car weighed in at 2700lb. He also had a conservative timing curve where I will be running an aggressive one.

Get it to the track and get some numbers then. Its easy to bench race. I wanna see some numbers. Get a video also. That way nobody can argue with you if you get an 11.

I will be cheering if you get some 11's in it...I'm in the same boat i'm back to a 16g till i get the funds for my new turbo...I will be at the trick or treat drags in a full weight 1g looking for 11's on the 16g....

I wouldn't go that far; my goal is just to get the car running.

Oh, wait--you were talking about yours. ;)

Yours too! You have the parts, assemble it already! :D

What, do I need to come and help?

Here's the thread. (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/dsm-video-links/300415-evo-3-16g-runs-10s-part-2-a.html) He's in Illinois, Google Earth says his town is essentially sea level (230meters).

Bring that same exact car up here and he will get nowhere near that time.
Would be lucky getting in the 11's probably.
Altitude sucks!!

Thats why this is going to a hard goal, but with weight mods, I can do it. He also had 1.4 60's. He said he went to an aluminum driveshaft and it takes more load off the t-case because he was having issues breaking them.

Tell me about it. On the bright side, the 2G is nearing running status once more, after which I can get back to working on the Galant...

Man after looking at some videos and times up here in this altitude I will be lucky to get a low 12. LOL I guess I will have some work to do.

Curt Brown on the DSMlink forums ran a 10 flat if I remember correctly and I think he trapped in the mid 130s. The E316G was supposed to be untouched too.

Yea and I hope I can hit 11 at this altitude, but it may be pretty hard from what others have done.

Not impossible, though. Just hard. :) I think most people give up before maxing out a 'small' turbo system.

That is so true, since I got e85 on this thing I love this turbo. It spools crazy and makes good power. I will max it till it blows. Pretty much there, just need cams, and SMIM. Thats about all I'm missing.

Does any one know which jets for a 50shot with E85 on a NX kit? Fuel ket, nitrous jet?
