I was wondering if anyone has rebuilt a tranny and if so what preloads and end play they used? I just learned how to do the measurements with solder so I am ready to go. Just need to know what measurements are the best. I have heard people using different things. This is for a stock 2g. Nothing done to it. Will probably see 16g power and thats about it. Now racing or too hard driving.
Any help would be appreciated.

I use a dial gauge to measure end play. I set them for 0 or if I have the right shim... .001"

After toasting 1st and 2nd synchros in my 1g AWD, my shade tree rebuild involved replacing all the taper bearings and synchros then I reinstalled the factory shims. Also I replaced all the seals and anything else that looked to be worn.

I know it wasn't the correct way to do it but it worked and still shifts like butter 10k miles later. YMMV

I think I have some of that info for a 1g if that interests you. I'll have to dig around to see if I still have it.

Its all in the factory service guide.

Spec for the input shaft end play is 0 - .002"
Intermediate is a little looser .0004-.004"

You want to set it on the tight side of spec for better shifts. To tight will shorten bearing life.

I found my manual, only problem is it's a 6mb PDF so I can't post it here.

I originally found it here:
http://www.geocities.com/htamotorsports/rebuild.html (http://www.geocities.com/htamotorsports/)

I think you will be most interested in the last section:

Also I just found this that might be of use to you:
