Everytime I switch into 4th, I hear a high pitched whine in, it disappears when the throttle is off, but as soon as I step on the gas pedal it starts up again. It varies with the throttle, sometimes in 3rd, but mainly 4th. Ideas? Is the tranny just showing signs of death? Shaft seals? My throttle body I know does leak but dont think that would cause it to only whine in 4th correct?

I used to experience a high pitched whine all the time and never could isolate the cause until after I got divorced, when I noticed the whine went away.
Seriously, I was getting something like that and it turned out to be the drivers side wheel bearing. It was fairly loud when I would get into the higher gears.

I would say the intermediate shaft bearing might be going bad if it sounds like it's coming from the trans. The tapered end bearing on the 3-4 side of the intermediate will make the gear whine if it gets loose. I would suggest you stop driving it, because the bearing or gears can let go at any time and if they do it will completely destroy and total the whole unit.

Its my dd. Everything shifts fine, it just started doing it out of nowhere. It only whines as soon as I get into 4th. Should I try to avid that gear as much as possible?

If it is in the trans, avoiding the gear will not change anything. It will destroy itself either way. It is giving you a warning right now. If you ignore it you will be looking for another tranny soon as that one will be ruined and not be rebuildable.
I would try to verify if it's coming from the trans or not. Bearing failures in trannies can go very bad quick.

I thought if you pushed on the gas the whine would go away and it come back when the throttle is closed, rather than only whining with the gas pressed. Looks the economy build is up next then.

See if you can find a way to drive the car in 3rd and 4th on a lift. If it's a tranny problem, it will be obvious once you have your head under the tranny case. Dead tranny bearings make some nasty noises.
