Well, I have never raced on a track like this with the SCCA before. I did solo trials in parking lots many many years ago, but that's it. Do I need to take some kind of class before I go on the 5th with the SCCA?? I took the PMI/FAASST safety class last year if that means anything. As long as I'm signed up through to the links you have I am okay?

I noticed that the FAASST guys are also going to be on the track the next week. Since they already know me and I already took their class I might just go with them instead if the SCCA wants me to take a class again... Let me know if you have any info on this. I looked a little and couldn't find it. Thanks!

Jack, the "class" they want is the day before on the 4th. It will be considerably discounted for those running in time trials on the 5th. I would suggest doing it even if it weren't required just for extra seat time on the new track to get to know it better. Feel free to give me a call if you need any more info on it.

Exactly right. We need to attend the class on the 4th at 5pm at the track. They recommend this even for returning competitors. It sounds like you have the experience, i'd say get the tech done, sign up and show up. The class is typically a re-cap of flags and safety, procedures, hot pits, etc.. I'd say sign up for the PDX and CTT then ask to be moved up to CTT after the PDX session. I just may know the instructor. :)

Certainly go through and check all the links and what not, it never hurts.

You betcha Jack. This first event is critical for getting the class out of the way, the car teched, signed off on to get on HPR, and to get a log book. It always seems like a lot to do, but it really isn't and it certainly is worth it in the long run. Once you have a log book for CTT on the car, you can get on HPR at any time from that day forward. An SCCA logbook is really a book that proves you and the car are legit for road racing and test days. Good stuff Jack, hope to see you out there with us.

In their check list it says this:

SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Helmet must be Snell 2000 or newer and in good condition (no cracks,
blemishes or large scratches. Arm Restraints are mandatory. Roll bar and cage padding applied in
required areas.

So if I read this right I have to have a roll bar? I can't use arm restraints without a roll bar, correct? Or do I not have to follow these rules if I don't have a roll bar?

Jack

They require arm restraints for cars without cages. Cars with cages have to have a window net. So your car without a cage, you need arm restraints.

JackM

I thought the arm restraints were held in place by the cage. I guess I'll have to do more research on them... Are passengers allowed with the SCCA?

Jack

No, arm restraints go through your lower lap belt.

Yes, passengers are allowed on practice laps only. Not during competition.

PDX/CTT CHIEFS, INSTRUCTORS, DRIVERS

I spoke with Grant tonight, and we discussed the complicated situation that we face this weekend. He asked that I sent an update regarding this weekend’s plans.

SHORT VERSION: We’re currently planning to cancel the PDX/CTT events both Saturday and Sunday. A final decision will be made by 8:00 Friday morning, emailed to all registrants, and posted on RMSolo. FRIDAY IS STILL AN OPEN TRACK DAY, AND THIS IS NOT A DECISION REGARDING THE CLUB RACING/DRIVING SCHOOL PLANS.

LONG VERSION:
The weather of course is a concern for everyone, but we also have the added complication of the Club Racing driving school also going on this weekend. For those taking the school, it is critical that they get a certain amount of time on the track Saturday. Given that, at best, the situation on Saturday looks marginal, the driver’s school will have priority for that time.

While Grant and I discussed alternatives for running a Sunday event without having time on track Saturday, we’ve heard concerns from several drivers and instructors. We hear and share your concerns about safely getting to and from the track; we faced a similar situation at PMI in Oct 2007.

That said, we wanted to communicate to you Thursday evening that a final decision will be made at 8:00AM Friday morning, and will be emailed to everyone registered and posted on the TT forum on RMSolo.org.

SHOULD THE EVENT GO ON, do not feel that you must attend to instruct or drive if you are not comfortable with the weather or any other situation.

Questions? Contact me at djobusch at comcast dot net Thursday evening. Otherwise, wait for the decision to be send/posted Friday morning.

So did anyone end up going to this? I didn't go because there was supposed to be this HUGE storm and well...nothing really happened down here in the Springs, so I'm glad I missed it  Oh well, it will be there all year I guess...

Everything was called off due to weather. Remember there are still open days on Monday (for bikes) and Friday (for cars) as well as the NASA and SCCA events that should be coming up.

Any advice for a nube trying to get into NASA or SCCA events? I have a descent suspension, swaybars, poly-inserts, lowered 2" on SPRINT springs & KYB-GR2's. Wheel bearings, tie rods, ball joints, and rack and pinion are all newer. *Just recently did the rack and pinion.

I heard NASA is opening a DSM open road class?

I'm really interested in getting my foot in the door and welcome some advice.

Thanks

I'm going to start doing autox this year, check out http://rmsolo.org for the schedule if you're interested. The first school/race is on the 25th/26th.

Actually Jake, this Friday is for Bikes only. Tomorrow is bike and cars...
http://www.highplainsraceway.com/events.html

They cancelled everything this last weekend. They weren't too worried about the on track stuff, it was the people getting there on I-70 with their trailers. From the news reports and how many cars went off, looks like a good decision. Wind and ice probably isn't fun with a big trailer.

Like Mark said, if anyone wants to get in on this stuff go to www.rmsolo.org (http://www.rmsolo.org) and poke around on the forums, check out the getting started page, and check the rules for what class you fit in.

May 2 is the next event, let's hope for better weather.

They must be making up for missing some other stuff. All I know is the new tires come in Thursday so we'll be out on the open testing days afterwards. I have a lot of seat time needed before we head back out to California. At least I know why my shift cable broke and the issue should be resolved from here on out.

If you want to come play with the SCCA I can help you in any way possible. If you just want to drive your street car the solo program as mentioned above or the time trials (www.sccatimetrials.org) program is a great entry way to get in. The solo program is in a parking lot with a coarse made out of cones and you are racing a clock. This is a very cheap and good way to learn car control. The time trials is on a rode coarse also against a clock but there are other cars on track at the same time. Limited passing zones are in place for safety. This is also more expensive than solo but gives more track time and hire speeds. If you want to go wheel to wheel racing there is more involved in car prep and expense. I usually suggest Spec 7 or Spec Miata as an entry level to get your feet wet. Spec 7 is probably the lowest cost way to get into wheel to wheel racing as you can find a reedy to race car for around $3000. If you have the money to race a DSM you can run it in ITE-O regionally or STO nationally.

Let me know if there is any thing else I can help with. The National Cars will be running on April 18-19 at PPIR if you want to come out and watch or even help flag on a corner (second best seat in the house). www.scca-cdr.org
