Didn't know if you all had seen this announcement on the ECMLink site:

ECMLink "lite"

We're giving some consideration to offering a “lite” version of ECMLink. The idea would be to enable us to drop the price point by removing some of the more advanced features (less support issues). The end result will be a product that effectively does much the same as an Ostrich/TunerPro combo but with an integrated logger all in one nice, clean package that sits quietly inside your ECU. You would basically be able to dial in new injectors and swap between Mitsubishi MAF sensors and dial in your fuel and timing tables, but not the more advanced features like custom output controls, extended maps, speed density, GM MAF support, etc.

It would provide MUCH enhanced datalogging support and having this tied in with the tuning package would make life so much nicer for many people. Plus it would be upgradable to a full ECMLink package with a firmware download! So you could basically get your feet wet, try out the features and let the package grow with your needs later.

If you're interested in something like this, let us know. We're still very much mulling this idea over.

And after overwhelming interest, a post on DSMTuners:

You could expect pricing to be roughly half the full package price. So about $295. With an upgrade to the full package being the other half. Given an Ostrich alone costs $175 and that you get a high quality (not cheap e-bay junk) opto-isolated, molded USB logging cable and all the logging features, support, upgradability, etc., etc., I don't think it's too bad.

At this point, it seems like a done deal to me. The response was just too positive. We're going to see if we can push this out.

I'll be shelving my chip and going with this as soon as it's out.

Sounds very appealing. I don't have a need for the more complex features of Link, but I'm sure this Lite version could replace my S-AFC with better results. I think I paid almost $300 for my S-AFCII about 7 years ago. With the upgradeability of this version, it will definitely be something people will pay more for when they have a need. So what's the downside to this option?

Best I can tell, the only downsides are that you won't have any of the higher level functions, such as output control/triggering of external devices like nitrous or meth, no ability to save and switch b/t 2 maps (which is being introduced in V3), no extended maps, etc. As far as I've read, it's like V2 with respect to functionality.

It will offer a stutterbox setup, and the DSM/ECMLink logging functions are the best I've ever seen, which this will offer as well. I'd say it's well worth the money for my needs, and being able to get rid of the SAFC and Palm logger will be great.

Here's a link (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/vendor-announcements/333484-ecmlink-new-features-comin.html) to the Tuners thread.

Guess freeware is taking enough users for them to care.

If you have a 2g, just get a evo8 ecu and flash it your self for free. Their open source is quite popular.

Heck, 1g, just run Jackel speed density. Have my brothers car running on it. Runs great.

Imagine how easy our lives would have been if this came out ten years ago when we were all running SAFCs, taking a dremel to our MAFs and unable to idle good on anything bigger than 720s.

I ran 1200's on an safc/maf-t combo with a perfect idle. Matt you just need to own up and buy V3 like I did. Best money ever spent.

I'd like to check out your car at some point Jay, and get a tour of V3 to see what it's like. I see you around town from time to time but I'm always going the other direction in traffic lol.

The best thing about V3 is that when I do get the "lite" version, I can upgrade to the full version at no extra cost other than the normal difference in price between the two...kinda like getting my feet wet until I decide I need to jump all the way in :)

Last I read, the tentative plan is to begin offering it in July.

The chips are different for the two so no it would not work. I do have my DSMlink version 2 for a 1g if you friend is looking still. Its listed in my forsale ad, but you can PM me if he is interested.
