So last year I tore down my 930 gearbox for rebuild, but got busy moving the shop and dealing with other issues and sent it out to a another trans builder who needed the work as a favor to help the guy out. the box came back all nice and clean and I put it away until ihad time to deal with it.

About a week ago I sent the 930 gearbox in to G Box in Boulder to have it shortened. This literally means they shorten the bellhousing by cutting about an inch off and then shortening and resplining the input shaft. Naturally the gearbox has to be torn down for this, which isnt a big deal and rather than do it myself I had them do the tear down.

About a week later (last Thursday) I got a phone call from them to inform me that my "pristine rebuilt" gearbox had a few issues.

First, the main bearing had been improperly installed and the bearings were literally BLUE from being overheated and would not last more than a few sessions. Probably would have exploded and taken out the entire gearbox.

Second, 2nd and third gears had been marred when the dog rings were pressed on and needed to ne honed for proper fit, and this was not done, the gears would likely have locked onto the shaft after only a few miles!

But, by far the BIGGEST issue was the pristine reverse gear assembly I had bought from a very low-milage car was MISSING!!! In its place was a gear that Erik and Stan both said would likely explode the first time I shifted hard into reverse. This is an $800 gear assembly new and $560 used!! I haven't actually seen it yet, but I will post pics as soon as I get up there to pick up the pieces. Very fortunately a replacement low-milage reverse gear assembly turned up at a very nice price, so I can at least re-assemble the box soon.

Not on the "hosed" side but a little disappointing was that the LSD was not rebuilt or set back up, just removed/re-installed. This isnt a big deal because I will likely replace it with a much stronger OG Giken unit.

Last- if you are in need of a professional trans rebuilder I highly recommend G Box. They specialize in Porsche/ Getrag gearboxes but have a vast knowledge base and are skilled rebuilders. They were also 100% honest with me regarding what they found even knowing I would likely perform the rebuild myself rather than having them do it.
