Well I am in process of re-working my tranny and the clutch has been chattering since it was installed 800 miles ago. So as long as the engine and trans is out , off comes the clutch and flywheel. Well , 2 pads on the disc are partially missing. There is also is a section of the pressure plate that looks like the casting was partially porous . It isn't a big area but it is there nonetheless.
I am thinking about running a solid disc 4 puck for next season. Any input?
Jim.

The PP looks ok to me, but I would definitely replace the disc. Maybe contact ACT and see if they'll replace it for free since it was such a quick failure?

Well it is still under warranty , for what the warranty is worth . I will not run another sprung disc puck type. This is the 2nd sprung 6 puck I have run in 2 different cars , and the 1st one did the same thing. I guess I should have learned after the 1st one.

Well I did use the search feature on this forum and in this drivetrain section. I was looking for the post Jack did on the 4 puck disc . I will most likely try this disc this season and see what happens.

Jim,
Were all of the failed ones by ACT? I am now installing a sprung 6 puck from South Bend Clutch and hoping mine doesn't look like that in 800 miles.

Just this disc. Several launches at the track , I am looking at a south bend clutch disc carbon/kevlar sprung hub full face. $160 at hoursepowerfreaks.com.

I haven't seen any real long term reviews from Southbend where they are really taking abuse, but I think they make a solid clutch and I think they might be one of the best choices out there.

Puck failures are usually due to people trying to slip them and use them like a normal street car, not from overpowering them. They are also hell on the friction surface, so that porousity is probably fretting rather than casting defect. I watched a friend launch the hell out of an 11 second car on a 6 puck many times with no issues, the one time he lost 1st gear and had to drive home slipping 2nd gear starts he destroyed the pucks before he got it home. Conversely I had a street disk last an entire year on 2nd gear starts at one point.

The clutch I am replacing is a South Bend. It lasted reasonably well until I added 50% more HP and slipped it badly during my first launch in 4 years. Failure symptoms were it would not shift above 7500 RPM and the pressure plate was cupped by 0.011".
I was happy enough to buy another one.
