View Full Version : Trying to hide my amp ideas?

I want to put an amp in my '92 TSi, but I don't want the thing being ripped off. There's been a lot of problems with cars in my area being broken into for easy grabs on stereo stuff, and I don't want my amp getting stolen. Would it be alright to stick the amp underneath the cardboard panels in the back, under the carpet, or will it get too hot being under there? Any other ideas for places to hide it?

I do NOT want this to be visible in any way from the outside, seeing as how the best way to keep things from being stolen is to make it appear there is nothing worth stealing. If putting the amp underneath the panels back there isn't an option, where else can I put it to keep it from being seen?

You don't have the privacy cover? I would say that is the first thing to get if you don't have one.

No, I don't have one. That's one of a few different parts I need for the back interior of my '92 talon.

Well I definitely never had any break ins on my car, even in a parking lot that had a couple break ins. It had the privacy cover over my sound system and I didn't leave anything valuable out and visible, the cd case sat under the seat and I always had just a little bit of trash behind the seats on the floor obsuring things and it was a great theft deterrent :)

I think whoever broke into my car knew what it was I had in there, but there was only one person I knew there that knew both the type of car I drove and what I had in it. This was apparently also campus break-in day, there were 3 other robberies that same day.

I'm trying to get the privacy covers and other stuff today, hopefully between better privacy covers and a good alarm system, nobody else will touch my stuff.

Easiest and best method of not getting it jacked? Don't install it.

Second easiest? Mount the amp to the bottom of the privacy cover with the sub box below that.

I haven't done much stereo stuff with the DSM, but you could see if there is any space under the seats.

Unless you're talking about something with a massive amount of power, you shouldn't have any issues with heat mounting it under the cardboard.

Not really any space under the seats, and the privacy cover tends not to hold weight that well if you try to mount an amp to it. I personally removed the spare and all the carboard support things to get some more space in the trunk and then built a custom box to fit it. It worked out pretty good for me at least.

I have mounted them in a couple different ways. I have cut the back of the seats and make a custom box the amp slid into. I have also made it apart of the sub box. I have hid it a the spare tire compartment. the nicest one i've helped in doing was we cut the out the bottom of the rear seats made a nice amp box and wired a couple 80 mm fans to suck air in and push out. and ran the cables under the seat. Sucks if a person had to sit in the back. But really who is small enough to sit back there anyway. :)

I think I'm just gonna get a privacy cover to hide the junk in my trunk. Anyone have any interior parts in grey for a '92 TSi? I need a new floormat for the back area too.

Ended up burying it in the back underneath the paneling and disconnecting the cable for my trunk. Between the pizo siren in the cab, the trunk not opening, and it being bolted underneath the paneling that's bolted down I think it's well hidden. Not even the wires for it can be seen.

I'd also recommend leaving the crappy stock tape player in. I had a really nice system in my car. Instead of having some useless change holder under the slim new decko, I left the good ole crappy tape player on the bottom. Heck I even had power to it so the lights came on. The face plate came off so what it looked like is some old junky DSM with early 90s pimp'n stereo.
Good luck man!

Thanks, no break-ins so far, so I guess what I'm doing is alright.
