I give you, "The Race":

I'll bet there's maybe 5 people left on this board that can identify the cars and drivers.

(VLC will open this)

At the time this was a seriously looked-forward-to matchup, hence why it was dubbed "The Race".

Maroon car: Norm Schilling
Gray car: John Salmi

That's right, but I think it's Schilling. He did the tint on my '99, best tint in town. Looks like he might be out of the tint game these days though, his website is a placeholder (www.qualitytint.com).

anyway... great race... i know Dan H. still has John's old car (2Liter), anybody know what happened to Norm's? i think he may have parted it out, but can't say for sure.

It was Norm Shilling and John Salmi.

Norm no longer has the tint shop in foci. He has since moved to Las Vegas with the business.

John Salmi if I remember right, moved to Missouri and is modding a Subaru Legacy GT.

Video's up top Shane. ;)

I've got John on Facebook, he's been moving around a bit lately, I think he's somewhere in the north US now? I'd have to look.

I lost track of Norm years ago, but I bet he's tearing up Vegas if that's where he ended up.

I just remember thinking how cool these cars were back then, I think I was all of 18 when this race went off (turned 30 last week, lol).

That capability was removed to ensure the integrity of the forum's discussions John. We have not discussed re-enabling this feature yet, but I think it would be reasonable to allow edits to be made for a certain time frame after a post has been made.

I will look into it as my schedule allows!

I have Norm's old car. And that kid is my younger brother haha. He bought it from Norm several years back. He said he was moving his business elsewhere. He seemed like a really nice guy who had tons of DSM goodies stashed in that tint shop!

I bought it from him last summer after he spun a rod bearing and couldn't keep up on it. It's on a smaller set-up than in the video but hopefully I can get it back to its glory days. Lets put it this way, especially if you saw my car at the meet on Saturday, It needs WORK.

I also remember this. Long, long time ago.

16G car was a street beast. 20G car meant you were serious about drag racing. All other parts were the same; 550s, FMIC, Walbro pump, S-AFC. Done.

Such a simpler time. :)

What is so humorous to me is how people used to think that the 20g was the threshold of what is even streetable - and unless you had serious credibility in the DSM community, you'd get flamed for even suggesting that you might be interested in a Green and you might get banned for suggesting you were interested in a Red - both turbo's small to average by today's standards. There should be a human behavior lesson to be gleaned from that.

Carl Morris
June 7th, 2010, 02:36 PM
I think that's partially because the technology has improved to get big flow with less lag. An old school Red at this elevation on a 2.0 is still a very laggy setup. Not something I'd want anyway. But a modern GT30+ turbo that makes the same or more power, no problem.

No, no rollbar/cage. Pretty committed to not making radical changes to my interior.

And no, they didn't mention it on Friday, but I know I was pushing my luck. Wanted that 11.2 that I knew was inevitable, but it was starting to cloud over and I'd already watched another guy get "asked" to leave until he had a cage.

I'd say that you've proven that you have a very impressive street car. No need to try to squeeze out another tenth or two. Imagine how fast your car would be if you had waited for the STS turbo kit! I've read that they make quite a bit more power than the prochargers. You'd be running 10s for sure and would have gotten the yelling at you deserved for going too fast.

Doric
June 14th, 2010, 10:57 AM
Ehh... I had an STS on my '04. The Procharger is much more consistent, manageable, and easier to maintain. I'm also making about 200 more horsepower on the Procharger than I was on the STS. I worked my ass off to fix the engineering issues in the STS on my '04 GTO and ultimately, ended up deciding that you just can't fight physics.

I like turbochargers - I really do. I chose the Procharger over turbo simply because it came in a install-it-and-run-it kit, but if I do go turbo, the snail will be where it belongs: under the hood.

thiazole
June 14th, 2010, 11:25 AM
Hmmm, good to know.
Out of curiosity, did the turbine of that STS turbo get very hot? I'd fear getting it hot and running over a puddle and cracking the turbine housing, but I don't know how hot they get being that far down the exhaust.

WOW guys, blast from the past!

I'm feeling OLD now, thanks!

I've got a shop going in Dallas, TX now, & am doing great!

Instead of the DSM, I'm sporting a 2009 Infiniti G37XS, which is the All wheel drive Sport model. I'm looking at the GTM supercharger, which would make it close to 500 HP, but have some concern about the automatic 7 speed tranny, which is the only way the All wheel drive G37's come.

MY my, but that old 20'g was a fun turbo back in the day. When I blew up that turbo the day before the import drags one year, I got a Buschur Racing tweaked 20g from Jeremy H, & it was guaranteed a mid 11 second car then, but I didn't wanna break anything on the tranny so sold the car to a dude who spun out on the snow & went through a fence with it. I figured it was retired for good now.

Also my facebook link is on my website, to keep up with current events!

Awesome that you found this thread, I was bummed when your old website from your Fort Collins business was down, really glad you're still in the business and doing well. I think your tint job on my 99 is still rolling around after I sold it to Stephen (prophecymiller on here).

Hey guys, thanks for the thumbs up!

I'm doing clearbra work here in Dallas, & I tell you, they needed a higher quality installer BADLY!

I've done so many full front wraps here, you wouldn't believe it! Probably about 30+ cars now in the last 6 months have had me do the entire hood, fenders & bumper on the front ends!

Have you heard about the new Satin film? It has a matte finish, which gives any car that non-glossy look, with the added benefit of being paint protected at the same time. I've got several people who want me to do their entire vehicles with it.. Crazy!

FNG here..This is kind of an appropriate thread for me though, as I can remember my first experience with DSM's was racing the grey Talon (John Salmi) with my Nova BITD. It was a bit of a surprise. Good thing I had a fast car or I would have felt pretty stupid that night.

Wow...blast from the past! Blown 944, are you the guy that brought that ethanol/nitrous/caged 60s Chevy II (IIRC) to the "Border Wars" get-together we had outside Ft. Collins back in the 1999/2000 timeframe? I was the guy that originally brought that up to my friends in Wyoming that put out the word to get everyone together that night, and I'm the guy that asked you to race John and I told you if was "faster than it looks" :-).

If that was you, I recall your car running 10s on the bottle, but you said you wouldn't use it on him and that should put you in the high 11s?

Man that was a fun night. I appreciated you running him because it was such a fun way to introduce the DSM to the average muscle car guys. The 5.0 guys before your run were talking major smack about the "rice" and right after the run everybody had an excuse about why they weren't quite ready to run that night even though John lost :-).

That was me, but it ran 10's off the bottle and much better on. No way I could use it that night though. It was quite a surprise. We sat around watching, and it didn't look like there were any cars that were super fast so we decided to leave. IIRC I didn't even heat the tires b/c I was just ready to leave and was very unsuspecting. His was a fast car for the first 1/8th that's for sure (IIRC he was trapping ~112 and I trapped 127 no nitrous).

I sure am glad the cars weren't as developed as they are now, or I would have been pissed LOL. My brother (99 z28) also raced his Supra later that year or the next (memory) and John pulled so hard on the top end that my brother kept claming he had nitrous on it. Anyway I have since sold all those cars and have been playing with a slew of different turbo cars.
