View Full Version : Vacuum Pump?

I want to pop in a vacuum pump in my GSX. I heard that the vac pumps some mid 80s Volvos had for the brake assist works well in NA applications, but I haven't found anyone that is using one on a turbo vehicle. Since they are all over the junk yards here, I was thinking of grabbing one and trying it out. Has anyone here ever used a vac pump in a DSM? Any noticeable changes in engine cleanliness, HP?? Just curious if anyone has anything like this and how it works for you before I go through the trouble of doing this...

I havent got around to it yet, but I was going to put a one way valve and a slash cut pipe in the exhaust.
Its alot easier then wiring up a vacumm pump, and it just puts the crap into the exhaust.
The Supra guys do it all the time. They use some check valve off of some Ford.

Yeah, I noticed Pete's supra had that at Bandi the other day. I heard though that it doesn't do 'as good' of a job as a pump though. Shoot, I guess I'll try the pump and you can try the valves. I'm sure both will work, but I guess the two of us can see how well the both work for the DSM... My main fear with the Volvo pump is if the darn thing can keep up under full boost.

I wonder what John Shepherd uses.

Using the exhaust to create the vacumn needed for the crankcase works pretty well, but the trade off is you WILL smoke under boost without an efficient filtration/catch can as the oil vapour is sucked from the crankcase and into the hot exhuast.
There are issues with using a vac pump on a wet sump engine- I would do a lot of research. The drag race and circle track guys should have a lot of info regarding this.

Josh, that's a very good question! Does anyone have any pics of Sheps engine?? I would assume what he is using works pretty good, lol!
Don, I found a good board for that I think-

I found some good read in there about floor coverings, so I think I might join and ask.
Thanks!

Edit: Shoot, here is some more info already :)

He doesn't from what I saw when I was at the shootout. Just two -10 lines going to a catch can. Same with the other guys like Marco. A believe someone a while back put an LS1 electric vac pump on but when it seized it caught on fire. I currently run one to the exhaust but it does smoke :(

Call me a n00b - but what is a vaccum pump for? My wife uses one to keep the carpets clean <shrug>

Drawing the crankcase into a vacuum for two reasons:
Creating a better ring seal for increased power and efficiency.
Evacuating crankcase gasses to not blow dipsticks out, create oil leaks, keep the oil cleaner, etc...
I need to put one on my car. It's kinda gassy.

BTW, found the things the Supras use.

I only need one, so if some else wants to split the cost I was thinking of buying the kit.
