Anyone familiar with the late 80s Toyota 22RET trucks (2.4L turbo)?

I may be buying one soon (cheap)--just wondering if there's anything I should watch out for. Aside from the obvious issues likely to exist on a 20-year-old stock turbo (cracked turbine housing, etc.) and the rust problems on the rear fender seam common to that era of Toys, are there any other common problems? This will be a temporary replacement for my daily commuter Mazda pickup that burns more oil than gas and emits "007" smokescreen every time I start it up cold...

It's always a sobering reminder of how good we have it as DSM owners regarding readily available and accurate technical information when you go looking for info about another type of vehicle. :(

A couple things I know. My Dad owned a 4Runner, and my best friend owned a xtracab pickup.

I've done a head gasket on a 22r that was mixing oil and water. Turns out one of the timing chain guides was worn, allowing the timing chain to come into contact with the front cover (aluminum) which has coolant passages inside. Instant chocolate milk effect. SO> any noise out of the front of the engine, make SURE the chains and guides are okay.

I have also replaced a couple exhaust manifolds because of cracks.

I have a customer in the office, more later!

Thanks, Jason--that's exactly the kind of info I need. :)

I'll make sure I ask to see the last timing belt service records; the seller is a coworker and friend of mine, so he has nothing to hide.

I'm not expecting the exhaust manifold to be in particularly good shape since it's a turbo motor, but that's just based on my experience with 1G DSM exhaust manifolds.
