Need some help please

I am getting a noise from my steering as I turn the steering wheel with engine off and front end on jack stands.
As i turn the steering wheel I get a noise that sounds a little like a spring popping. It will make a noise that in print sounds like "sproing". It will do this 3 or 4 times as I turn the wheel from center to lock...right or left.
I know it isn't a spring. I'm just not sure what it is.
Could it be something in the rack and pinion?

Check your upper strut mount bearings. See if either one is dry, gritty or otherwise damaged.

You're probably hearing the spring itself binding and releasing while turning.

I have Megan coil overs. With the front end in the air, no weight on the front end, why would the spring be binding?

I got my wife to help. She turned the steering wheel while I looked at the springs on the coil overs.
