Im thinking of getting a ball bearing gt35r for my car now but im just curios from were should i tap my oil source to it, how much oil pressure is to much or to low. My current engine is a stock 6 bolt with no balance shafts with a ported oil filter housing to reduce high oil pressure. I tested my oil pressure from the oil filter housing before and i was getting 10psi at idle and like 80-90psi at higher revs. From what i was told i have to feed it of the head for ball bearing turbos but i just need to know how much oil pressure is needed that way i know if i would need an oil restrictor. If this turbo requires to much attention and precise oil pressure i think i would rather go with a holset turbo but im not sure. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I personally think you should have a restrictor no matter what the feed location to make certain it is not over oiled. I also think the head feed is unreliable enough that I would probably run a feed from the housing to make sure it is not under oiled.

The GT35R should have a built in restrictor. I've fed a BB turbo off the head with no issues. My brother runs his off the head with zero issues and his is a daily driver.

I think if you feed it off the oil filter housing, you will be pushing oil in no time. BB turbos require very little oil.

My turbo is fed from the head with the FP restrictor / filter and it does fine

So in other words you guys think i should be fine feeding oil of my head with no restrictor? What about an inline oil filter?

ALWAYS run a restrictor wherever you feed it from for a BB CHRA.

You need some kind of restrictor. Ask your turbo manufacture if it has one built in or not. If not then you need to add one.

Here's some information from Garrett's website:

"Garrett ball bearing turbochargers require less oil than journal bearing turbos. Therefore an oil inlet restrictor is recommended if you have oil pressure over about 60 psig."

"An oil restrictor is recommended for optimal performance with ball bearing turbochargers. Oil pressure of 40 - 45 psi at maximum engine speed is recommended to prevent damage to the turbocharger's internals. In order to achieve this pressure, a restrictor with a 0.040' orifice will normally suffice, but you should always verify the oil pressure entering the turbo after the restrictor to insure that the components are functioning properly. Recommended oil feed is -3AN or -4AN line or hose/tubing with a similar ID. As always, use an oil filter that meets or exceeds the OEM specifications."

I really like the idea of sourcing the oil from the OFH as you are getting fresh filtered oil. I don't see how this could be any worse than the head as long as the correct restrictor is used. Just make sure to measure your oil pressure right at the turbo after the restrictor(you can get nice pressure gauges at Parker Store that aren't too expensive).

As it says above, you will also want a filter for the feed. If you run it from the head, you will obviously need an inline filter but keep in mind they can get clogged, so check it periodically.
