View Full Version : 27" diameter tires??

Hey all,
Looking further into what's available in tires for Land Speed Racing that will fit onto a set of 16" 2G donut spare rims, the only selection available is from M&H. Its a 185/80/16 aka 4.5/27-16. What effect would running 27" diameter tires have on the car, and/or can an AWD 2G run that larger diameter w/o messing up the transaxle/transfer case/rear diff ???
Since this is the ONLY 16" dia. rim size racing tire man'f. by anyone which could be used on the Salt, if it won't work I'll have to find 5-4.5" 15" diameter steel rims to run a 4.5/2526/15 tire. (Someone from the 300mph Club told me early-80's Ford LTD donut spare rims are what he uses.) There's all kinds of 15" tires available for LSR, but that'd mean I'd probably have to either grind down the stock 2G calipers or install 1G front brakes which is a big step backwards in braking.
Your thoughts?? James

What rpm are you running right now at 150mph? Where is your hp peak? Unless you are already geared way up, I could see tall tires being a good thing for you, as long as you run all 4 the same size.

With the 225/50/ZR16 it was turning ~6500rpm at 148.3xxxxmph. HP was ~165 DSMLink with no fudge, with stock maps for timing and fuel.
I hooked up with Steve from DSMLink Forum two days ago and dialed the DSMLink in. Still need to get new TB shaft seals as these are leaking after finding and fixing the other small boost leaks in the B&M FPR, BISS screw, and 1G TB top ports. Should of done all this so before I went to B'ville as its now accelerating 2mpg/sec in 5th instead of 1mph/sec, and also dropped a full second off the 90-105mph time in 4th. Also am going to switch to BR7ES plugs and get a set of BP8's, and will change to a 170F thermostat from the stock 195F as it runs hot in 5th gear which is pulling timing. Thinking about upgrading from the stock radiator, and will probably also change to a 19x12x4" I/C core from the 19x9x3" its got now for more engine and charge cooling.

So it sounds like your gearing is pretty ideal with your current tires for hitting 150 or so. What's your next goal above 150 and what rpm do you expect your hp peak to be at when you go for that speed?
If I recall correctly a 225/50-16 is about 24.5 inches tall? 148.3*(27/24.5) = 163.4 mph at ~6500rpm on 27" tires.
That's too bad about the leaks. If fixing them doubled your acceleration rate in 5th, then obviously that cost you :-). It did notice you were getting some temperature increase throughout the run, so the radiator would probably be good as you put more power to it.

The Galant GVR-4 came stock with 2-piston calipers, same as 1Gb's and 2G's, and used 15" wheels stock.
Is there a reason you need to use steel rims? I have 11.75" 4-pistons squeezed under 15" rims. It's close, but it fits (please pardon the bling):

Well, all it has to do is go fast in a straight line and stop once, so might as well sacrifice some thermal mass and save 2lbs. of rotating mass per corner. Besides, they look cool. :p
Took hours with the Dremel, though. ;)

thats a pretty cool brake rotor. Amazing what you guys have to go through for weight savings. Just don't turn into a bulimic/anorexic in the name of science! :D

Where did you get the pic of Erik! ;)
Erik, did Todd do those for you? I haven't ordered anything from him this year. Glad someone is helping him rebuild his car.

Yup, I bought those from Todd. He was pretty helpful on the phone--this isn't a direct fitment for a 1G, so we're kind of experimenting here.
Between these brakes and the parts I've needed for the last two Wilwood setups for the 2G (brake hoses, pads, anti-squeal shims, brackets, etc.) I've probably invested more $$ in go-slow parts than go-fast parts in the last year. ;)
Say, anybody have any leads on where I could find a trained monkey that can drive...? That ought to shave a few pounds...

I thought Steve Wells had worked on importing one for Quadzilla a while back...

Looks pretty light. I'd like to see it nail a good 1-2 shift on a crappy cable shifter like monkeys have been known to do, though.

Not sure if I could afford to mod the robot and the car at the same time. I suppose you could have the robot control some kind of solenoids or hydraulics or air plungers directly to move the shift forks without the stock shifter mechanism. Some might say then why not just have the ECU do that, but I don't think they'd understand how complex that could become. Easier to just have the robot do it.

I think if you go to 1010tires.com they can tell you what the stock size tires are and what will happen when you change sizes; eg. 3% faster than indicated, or 2% slower than indicated. Sorry but I don't have the link.
