In the spirit of getting some content on here, I'll post a Q. Couple of weeks ago I bought a rebuilt head from Jack. Got the bad boy all put back together and it's running great except the lifters are crazy loud. Got about 50 miles on it now, is this normal? If so, when should I expect it to quiet down?

Which lifters did Jack use? What weight oil are you running?

Jack re-used old 1g lifters, he said that if cleaned properly (which I'm sure he did) they should work just fine. My old head was never this loud. I am using 10w-30 castrol. I'm gonna change the oil and the filter again tonight, just in case i let some old gasket junk slip into the passages. I tried real hard to prevent that from happening but I'm sure some graphite powder got in there, just kinda of a fact of life.

I would agree if I hadn't just dropped much $$ on this new head. I'll talk to jack about it, I'm sure he will make things right. So is it safe to assume this isn't normal? That was really the question.....

It probably isn't normal, but won't hurt anything. It seems that over a little time all dsm lifters tend to tick, but I agree, put the 3G lifters in there and solve the problem for good.
I tried the MCCC method first, a little improvement, but still ticked.
I had the 3Gs put in my car, and all my phantom knock / tick problems went away. Well worth the investment.

I'm with Frank on that one. They DID make a difference in his car.
Maybe just because I put 'em in.
Ha! :D :D :D :D :

3G lifters will quiet it down. You can get them cheaply at Parts Dinosaur. About $8.00 each.

I talked to Jack about my lifters the other night. He told me that if they don't settle down after another tank of gas, he would replace them. For this week, my car will sound like an army of angry grandmothers :D Got a chance to floor it last night too, no knock all the way to redline and no burnt oil smell! Now I need to start saving for a new turbo (got some play in the 14b) and fun parts.
