Okay, so I picked up an 2G AWD for cheap and want to have some fun with it. What's a "safe" way to launch this thing? I've only reved to about 2000rpms so far and it's pretty weak. I'm not looking for a 7000rpm clutch-drop launch, but just something to take advantage of AWD. I'm not looking to hurt the tranny or anything too much, but just a little more fun off the line.

Stand on the brake, mash the gas and try not to move forward.

If you dont already have a large aftermarket transmission cooler, then get one. Power braking creates a lot of heat, and heat kills automatic transmissions.

Jeff - I would highly recommend contacting John at Import Performance Transmissions (http://www.ipttrans.com). Hands-down the best source for information, parts, and advice regarding the DSM A/T.

IMO you won't be able to generate enough torque to "take advantage of the AWD" without nitrous. If I had an automatic AWD turbo car I would be very motivated to use the bottle, because that's the one way to REALLY make the thing take off hard. AWD, automatic transmission, turbo, and nitrous are a great combo. Without the nitrous, not so great on launch unless you have big displacement.

On a stock turbo, with a boost controller and catback... we were able to stall to 3k something rpm on our 1993 TSI auto. We were running consistant 1.9-2.0 60'

Interesting. I hadn't seen anybody do that up here on the stock torque converter. Even so, the problem is that if people want to go fast, they are going to put on a bigger turbo, and then they won't be able to make boost on the stock torque convertor off the line without nitrous.
